The UK’s favourite car colour revealed

It has been revealed that UK car buyers' most popular colour choice for new cars in 2022 is grey, for the fourth consecutive year!

Data released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows that 415,199 grey cars were registered in the UK last year. This counts for over a quarter (25.7%) of all cars sold.

You might think that UK drivers would be fed up with the sight of grey - with a seemingly endless array of grey skies and grey economic forecasts. But no, it seems that we can't get enough. Not only is grey the most popular car colour once again, but its popularity is on the rise, up 1.7% compared to 2021.

Black came in second place, and white third. This has also been the exact makeup of the top three since 2019. It means that 62.5% of all new cars that hit the road last year were either grey, black, or white.

Silver, which was the UK's most popular choice from 2001-2009 was all the way down in sixth place with just 6.1% of the market share. This is its lowest ranking for over 20 years.

Kia Sportage in grey

Kia's Sportage SUV was ranked sixth in the top 10 cars by colour in 2022, in - you've guessed it - grey.

The fifth generation of the Sportage was launched back in the summer of last year and accounted for the most sales of any Kia model in 2022

We think the Sportage looks awesome in Yuka Steel Grey. It's not your average shade of grey, with an obvious hint of blue, but it's classed as grey nonetheless.

If you prefer a more traditional, darker grey, the Kia EV6 comes in Interstellar Grey. Kia's award-winning EV was named What Car? Car of the Year 2022. The fully electric car has a massive driving range of up to 328 miles and can rapid charge 10-80% in just 18 minutes.

There's also a whole host of quality used cars in various shades of grey too that we think you'll love, available at Chapelhouse.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said: “Car colour choice theoretically proclaims something about who we are as drivers, and buying a car today comes with many possibilities to customise your vehicle to match.

“After choosing from the market's ever-growing choice of makes, models, powertrains, wheel trims and in-car tech, picking out the perfect paint is an exciting decision to make. While the most popular shades remained unchanged for 2022, for those looking to ensure their vehicle stands out from the crowd, there remains a huge variety of colour choices from across the rainbow available to suit every character.”

So if you're looking for something a bit brighter and would rather stand out than blend in, we've also got you covered. Here are some of the more colourful cars available at Chapelhouse:
