What is an MOT test?

What is an MOT test?

An MOT test is an annual test of vehicle safety, roadworthiness, and exhaust emissions. MOT stands for Ministry of Transport, and the test was introduced to the UK in 1960. It is a legal requirement every year for all cars over three years old.

It is illegal to drive a car on the road that doesn't have a valid MOT certificate and you could face a £1000 fine if caught. If the car is classed as 'dangerous' by the tester, you'd be looking at an even bigger fine of £2,500 and three penalty points on your licence.

An MOT test is not the same as having your car serviced and should never be used as a replacement. Your car should undergo regular maintenance in between every MOT test to ensure it is kept in good condition. Unlike a car service, the gearbox, engine, and clutch are not tested in an MOT, and no parts or fluids will be replaced.

An MOT failure will require the vehicle to be retested.

What is included in an MOT test?

Your car will have a thorough inspection during an MOT and many different aspects of the car will be checked.

MOT checks include:

  • Wheels and tyre tread depth
  • Lights
  • Battery and wiring
  • Steering and suspension
  • Horn
  • Doors
  • Brakes
  • Bonnet
  • Headlamps and taillights
  • Hazard warning lights
  • Mirrors
  • Seat belts
  • Boot and tailgate
  • Windscreen wiper blades and washers
  • Registration plates
  • Fuel system
  • Exhaust system and emissions - hybrid vehicles are exempt from emissions testing

If your vehicle's exhaust emissions are too high or the car is deemed insufficiently roadworthy, then it will fail the MOT test.
